The International Council of Shopping
Centers is based in New York city. Roy has moderated about 6
international conferences for this trade association. With
over 65,000 members worldwide the 180+ staff met to discuss
their successes and any challenges they face as the
organisation continues to grow. Roy introduced the speakers
and conducted a ‘no-holds-barred’ panel discussion with
senior staff and a small group of long-standing members, one
of whom travelled from South Africa to attend this meeting.
The following day, Roy chaired a business development
workshop with ICSC’s marketing staff. Twice the number of
people showed up than expected for a session that explored
ways to grow the organisation by tapping into the power of
word-of-mouth marketing, a specialist area of Roy’s
expertise. He is the author of the book’s “Meet Greet and
Prosper” and “Rapid Result Referrals”. While in New York Roy
also attended a meeting to discuss ICSC’s forthcoming World
Summit in South Africa (see below).
ICSC, Cape Town, South Africa
Roy moderated ICSC’s first World Summit
in Istanbul, Turkey in 2005, when he interviewed Jean
Chretien, the former Prime Minister of Canada and Lee Scott
Jnr, the CEO of the world’s largest retailer – Walmart.
Again, he was asked to moderate this global event. Nearly
2,000 senior executives and global investors travelled from
all over the world to meet and discuss the shopping centre
industry. Roy chaired a variety of panel discussions as well
as introducing and interviewing a vast number of speakers
which included the Nobel Prize winner and former President
of South Africa FW de Klerk. At one point Roy asked de Klerk
‘You say you and Nelson Mandela have become friends. How
long did it take to learn to trust one another?” Another
speaker was Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s former Director
of Communication’s and Strategy who gave a very stimulating,
candid and engaging presentation.

BAT
Global Legal Conference, Paris
Tobacco has become a highly
controversial industry. It is also highly complex. Roy was
invited back to moderate BAT’s second global conference for
its in-house lawyers. Roy chaired many detailed discussions
on various legal and commercial topics. In order to fulfil
this role, Roy had to be extremely well-briefed, and possess
a high level of understanding in order to add value to
discussions by some of the world’s most experienced
litigation lawyers. He also conducted an extended,
un-scripted interview with BAT’s CEO. As part of his
moderating role, in the months leading up to this
conference, Roy interviewed many of BAT’s board members and
country managers on video, talking about the issues they
face around the world. Roy’s staff edited 8 videos which
were shown at appropriate times during the conference.
Presentation
Coaching, Zimmer, Swindon
No, Zimmer don’t make ‘frames’! Zimmer are
a world leader in the manufacture of orthopaedic implants (eg
hip and knee joints). They have been a client for about a
decade. The company was planning its annual UK sales conference
and it was felt that each of the presenters would benefit from a
session to help them focus on their objectives and gain tips on
how they can improve the delivery of their presentations. For
quite a few hours, Roy was bombarded with questions by the top
team. During the last 10 years Roy has worked with Zimmer he has
moderated a series of high-level ‘Advisory Boards’ with a small
but select group of top European orthopaedic surgeons. These
sessions took place over 2 days and involved
moderating/facilitating extended (and very detailed) discussions
about orthopaedic surgery.
